An association of driving instructors in Guernsey has been formed.

The Guernsey Driving Instructors Association has 23 initial signatories and will aim to support members and ease liaison with the government.

It is hoped the group will benefit from closer working, helping members of the public and to safeguard drivers and instructors.

Wayne Stokes, chairman of the association, said the group had been formed after some previous difficulties communicating as an industry with the government over the last 10 years.

'Ensure instructors are treated fairly'

He said: "During this time the States had been misinformed that there had been consultation on two occasions, implying driving instructors' agreement with proposals."

It is hoped the association's formation will "resolve issues resulting from this and establish a good working relationship for the future", he added.

It follows the States decision earlier this month that all driving instructors should present an enhanced DBS check to ensure the safeguarding of people learning to drive.

Members of the association had liaised with the committee for environment and infrastructure to agree on the requirement, but Mr Stokes said "there are often issues that crop up" and the association "needs to ensure instructors are treated fairly".
