More than 100 jobs could be created after an Italian construction supplier announced plans to create a new factory near Ilkeston.

Fassa Bortolo - which specialises in pre-mix renders and plasters - has signalled its intent to build its UK base at New Stanton Park, Erewash Borough Council said.

The proposed facilities would cover 170,000sq ft (15,793sq m) and include offices and a training academy.

The Labour-led council said it expects to receive a planning application for the project shortly.

Fassa Bortolo, which has its HQ in Treviso, Italy, was investing £350m as it expanded around the world, the council said.

The authority added the proposals came as New Stanton Park continued to take shape on 220 acres of the old Stanton Ironworks site.

Thousands of people worked at the ironworks before it closed in 2007, with the redevelopment of the site being led by Verdant Regeneration.

Labour MP for Erewash, Adam Thompson, described the move as a "massive vote of confidence" in the local economy.

He added: "It's proper industry, and good local manufacturing jobs, being brought home to Ilkeston – I'm incredibly excited."
