A man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after a suspected stabbing, police said.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said they were called to an incident on Whitburn Road in Wythenshawe at about 20:00 GMT on Wednesday.
Despite the emergency services' best efforts, GMP said a local man, 47-year-old James Murray, died at the scene.
Detectives said they had detained a 57-year-old man who remained in custody for questioning.
In a statement, Mr Murray's family said they "appreciate the expressions of sympathy and support since we have discovered the sad news of [his] untimely death."
The family added: "We, at this time, ask for privacy as we deal with our grief and loss."
Det Ch Insp Lee said: "We understand some residents may have concerns in relation to this incident, and I would like to take this opportunity to reassure the community that we believe this to be an isolated incident with no wider threat."
