A Conservative councillor has been suspended by his party pending an investigation into undisclosed matters.

Matt Binley has been executive member for highways, travel and assets at North Northamptonshire Council.

He will now sit as an Independent councillor and said: "I can confirm I have been suspended... and will issue a statement in due course."

Jason Smithers, leader of the Conservative-run unitary council, confirmed the suspension and said: "We understand that this matter may be of interest, however, we are unable to provide further details at this time."

Binley represents the Brickhill & Queensway ward in Wellingborough.

He was elected in 2021 during the first elections for the new unitary authority that was formed when the two-tier county and district council system was abolished.
