Twenty-nine people have been arrested following rioting in Hull on Saturday.

Police officers were attacked as trouble flared following an anti-immigration rally in the city centre.

Cars were damaged, shops were looted and fires were started.

Humberside Police Assistant Chief Constable Thom McLoughlin described the violence as "mindless thuggery".

Mr McLoughlin said 11 officers were injured, with some requiring hospital treatment.

"The events of this weekend were utterly senseless, and whilst those involved attempted to tear our communities apart, the last 48 hours have been truly heart-warming, seeing residents come together to help everybody who has been affected by such mindless thuggery this weekend," he said.

He said further arrests were expected with investigators viewing "numerous clips and videos that have been sent into us as well as circulating on social media".

Police said 24 of those arrested had been released on conditional bail as investigations continued.

One 25-year-old man has appeared in court charged with violent disorder, three counts of robbery, two counts of burglary and criminal damage.

John Honey, of Park Grove, Hull was remanded in custody at Hull Magistrates' Court on Monday.

He will appear before the city's crown court on 5 September.
