Plans for a new £27m leisure centre have been announced for Atherstone.

The facility would include a main four-lane swimming pool, learner pool for all levels of ability and toddler splash pad for water play, North Warwickshire Borough Council said.

The centre, which is set to replace the town's existing facility and would be in a similar place, would feature a gym, fitness class studio, community space for events, and children's adventure play zone.

A planning application was expected to be submitted in the new year, with building work anticipated to start in the summer, the council said. Public consultation sessions are planned.

Drop-in sessions are to be held at the Atherstone leisure centre, where plans will be available to view.

The first are set for 18:30 GMT on Monday and 07:00 on Wednesday.

Additional sessions would take place in the borough in the coming weeks, with dates and times being announced shortly, said the council.

The new facility was set to "deliver a modern, inclusive space for health, fitness, and community wellbeing", the authority added.

The provision would face on to public space leading from Long Street.

The project represented "a major investment in the borough's future, with a wide range of facilities designed to meet the needs of residents of all ages and abilities".
