The A1(M) in Hertfordshire will be fully closed for nine hours while essential work is carried out to investigate a "significant safety defect".

National Highways, external said the motorway between junction six for Welwyn and junction seven for Stevenage would be shut from 21:00 GMT on Tuesday until 06:00 on Wednesday.

It said that while it recognised the "challenges posed" by any road closure it "condemns the unfair frustration expressed by drivers towards roadworkers".

Since Thursday, a team has been working to resolve the problem and to "ensure the safety of all road users", it said.

Lane one of the northbound carriageway will remain closed for the week.

Heather Openshaw, head of service delivery, said: "We are sorry for any inconvenience caused.

"The team is working around the clock to determine the full extent of the defect and confirm the remedial works that are required."

Drivers have been asked to allow extra time for their journeys and to follow the official diversion route.
