A woman in her 80s died in a three-vehicle crash on Saturday night, the third death on the roads this month in the same Surrey village.

The crash happened on the bridge over the Downs Link on Elmbridge Road in Cranleigh just after 21:30 BST.

The woman was a passenger in one of the cars involved, and was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The driver of the car, a man in his 80's, sustained serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

This is the second crash within 24 hours in Cranleigh where someone has lost their life, and another person died earlier this month in the same village.

Surrey Police confirmed that the driver of one of the other vehicles involved in Saturday's crash, a man in his 30s, was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, and causing serious injury by dangerous driving.

The occupants of the third vehicle sustained only minor injuries.

The bridge on Elmbridge Road and the surrounding area was closed while officers carried out their inquiries but has now reopened, a force spokesperson added.
