Additional police patrols will take place on West Yorkshire's roads

West Yorkshire Police has launched a campaign to cut the number of people killed or seriously injured by drink and drug drivers over the festive period.

Increased patrols will take place on roads across the region, with officers reminding motorists of the consequences of driving under the influence.

People have also been urged to speak to friends who may be considering driving after drinking or taking drugs, to encourage them to think again.

Insp Clare Grey said drink-driving was more prevalent during the festive season and added: "If you do hurt someone, you also have to live with your actions forever. The consequences are massive and they don't stop after the 12-month driving ban."

She said drink-driving was "more prevalent" during the festive period.

"There's more socialising, Christmas parties, people going out and being tempted to have a drink," she said.

A force spokesperson said its 2025 campaign would hopefully encourage people to "think twice" before getting behind the wheel while under the influence of drink or drugs.

Insp Grey said drivers caught under the influence of drink or drugs would receive "at the very least a 12-month ban and a hefty fine as well as risking driving disqualifications."

"And that's just if you're not in an accident and hurt someone," she said.

"Just leave the car at home.

"That's the safest decision."

The force said it aimed to reduce all road deaths in West Yorkshire to zero by 2040.

West Yorkshire Deputy Mayor for Policing and Crime Alison Lowe OBE said: "We all have a role in road safety.

"If you know someone who drives under the influence, or is considering it, you can prevent a tragedy by speaking to them.

"If they won't listen, please report them and never get in a car driven by them.

"Don't take a chance on your life or your loved ones this Christmas.

"The pain and devastation of road death is clear to see."
