A sports centre and a swimming pool will be closed over the weekend because of a "public safety issue".

Active Luton said the decision to close both Lewsey Sports Park and Lewsey Park Pool came after "careful consideration and consultation" with Luton Borough Council and Bedfordshire Police.

The organisers of Lewsey Park Carboot said Sunday's event had been cancelled on police advice.

Flyers shared online have advertised a "block party" to take place in the Lewsey Farm area with live music, although no event is listed on the council's website.

In a Facebook post, Bedfordshire Police said: "We are aware of concerns in the community around a publicised event in Lewsey Farm on Saturday 31 August.

"We want to reassure communities that we are aware of the concerns around this and will have a visible police presence in the area throughout the weekend. We are also working with partners to ensure that residents feel safe and supported.

"Anyone taking part in, or inciting, criminal behaviour will be dealt with swiftly and robustly."
