A man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering a man who was stabbed to death in a street disturbance in the early hours of New Year's Day.

Officers were called to Sussex Street in Rochdale at about 02:30 GMT and the 38-year-old victim was found with a severe knife wound in nearby Essex Street, Greater Manchester Police (GMP) said.

He died at the scene "despite the best attempts of emergency services", the force added.

A man in his 30s is being questioned in custody and detectives are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.

On first releasing details of the incident, GMP said another man, 30, was also seriously injured and taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Initial inquiries suggested it was "an isolated and targeted attack" with no wider threat to the community, it added.

Det Insp Paul Davies said: "The thoughts of the entire investigation team remain with the victim's family and loved ones as they come to terms with his loss."

He urged people with information to come forward.

"No matter how small the information may seem, it may be crucial to our investigation and assist us in providing answers for a grieving family," he added.
