In his tribute to Diogo Jota yesterday, Liverpool manager Arne Slot said fans would continue to sing "Jota's song".

Over the past season Liverpool fans have often sung this chant, to the tune of Bad Moon Rising by Creedence Clearwater Revival, about Diogo Jota:

"Oh, he wears the No 20 / He will take us to victory / And when he’s running down the left wing / He’ll cut inside and score for LFC / He’s a lad from Portugal / Better than Figo don’t you know / Oh, his name is Diogo!"

Peter Millea said the Diogo Jota chant was regularly sung in the stands even when the forward was not playing

One mark of how popular Diogo Jota became with Liverpool fans was how regularly a chant about him rang out in the stands - even when he wasn't on the pitch.

Former Liverpool councillor Peter Millea, a home and away regular, said Jota's down-to-earth, relatable personality resonated with fellow fans as well as his talent.

He told the BBC's Marc Gaier: "There was something about him as a player when he first came to us that he became an instant hit.

"He was one of those players you can easily take to, because of the manner in which he conducted himself on and off the pitch and the important goals he scored."

Mr Millea said some fans at Anfield had broken into impromptu renditions of the chant while paying their respects.

"I'm sure we'll hear it loud and clear at Wembley for the Community Shield and we'll hear it at Preston for the first pre-season away game, you know it'll be sung around the field against Athletic Bilbao and then during the course of the rest of the season and probably forever-more," he said.

  8. Jota 'played with a smile on his face' says Heskeypublished at 12:03 British Summer Time

Former Liverpool and England forward, Emile Heskey, has been telling the BBC News Channel that he believes many people "will be mourning right now" over the death of Jota, whom he describes as a "friend to a lot of people".

"It’s just a difficult time, not only for the club [Liverpool], but for the whole footballing fraternity that we’ve lost two of our players," says Heskey, also referring to Jota’s brother André Silva, who also died in Thursday’s crash.

Speaking about Jota’s football style, he adds that his "energy" and “intelligence" were key, and that a lot of players were remembering how he "played with a smile on his face".

“Our thoughts go to his wife Rute, their three children and the rest of the family, and to Diogo Jota and André Silva’s friends.

“We have created a family in the national team that goes far beyond football. And Diogo is an important part of that – on and off the field. His professionalism and belief were both contagious and exemplary. On the pitch, Diogo wore the jersey with pride and his work on the field is world-class.
