More than 118,000 people visited the Royal Cornwall Show, firming up its place as "the biggest date on the Cornish social calendar", organisers said.

The three-day event, for which the sun shone throughout, attracted 118,201 people.

There were record entries in the sheep sections and the quality of animals on display were "some of the best that can be remembered for a long time", organisers said.

Chris Riddle, show secretary, said there were 2,470 fewer attendees than in 2022.

Quad bike stunts were among the big draws for the crowds, organisers said.

But he said 2022 had marked the return of the show after the pandemic, and people were now "watching their wallets a little closer".

He added: "We are really grateful for the support of all those that visit, compete and trade at the show.

"The atmosphere that we have become known for really shone through, especially so in the livestock and equine sections, where we saw some of the highest competition, both in numbers and quality, we have seen for some time.”

The Royal Cornwall Agricultural Association also cited the Burke Cattle Trophies, the "only true national award" for cattle showing left in the UK, among highlights.

Therese Coffey, secretary of state for environment, food and rural affairs, attended on the first day.

Other highlights included Ben Atkinson and the Liberty Horses in the main ring, and Paul Hannah, who performed a quad bike stunt, as well as RAF Falcons parachute jumps, organisers said.

Mr Riddle added: “We would like to thank all the hard-working and dedicated team of volunteer stewards, judges, staff and contractors that work tirelessly to ensure that the show goes ahead as smoothly as it does.”

Next year's event will take place on 6, 7 and 8 June.
