Two more people have arrested on suspicion of murder after a man described by his family as a "larger than life character" was killed in a house fire.

Mark Vernal died in hospital after he became trapped in the blaze at the home on Dumbarton Green in Wigan on the morning of 14 August.

A 48-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder over the suspected arson attack and two other men, aged 45 and 27, have also since been held, Greater Manchester Police said.

In a tribute released via the force, Mr Vernal's family said their "hearts are broken beyond belief".

They said: “He was a beloved father, brother, uncle, and friend. Mark was taken in such tragic circumstances.

“He was a larger than life character and loved by many."

Witness appeal

The two older men have been released on bail, police said, while the 27-year-old remains in custody for questioning.

Det Chf Insp Nicola McCulloch said the force was still appealing for information and "working hard to get answers for Mark’s family".

She added: “There will be people who know what happened that night, and we appeal to them to come forward as soon as possible.

"In cases like this even the smallest piece of information can prove vital to the progression of our investigation."
