Town faces five months of closures for gas works

SGN is expecting to return in 2026 to complete the second phase of its work

Residents of a Kent town are facing about five months of diversions to accommodate essential gas works.
Phase one of SGN's project to replace 3.5km (2.2 miles) of gas mains in Upper Grosvenor Road in Tunbridge Wells, between North Farm Road and Grosvenor Bridge, started on Monday.
Different sections of Upper Grosvenor Road will be closed throughout the five months for safety reasons.
SGN said: "It's part of a 30-year programme to replace our old metal mains reaching the end of their useful lives with new plastic pipe."
The "essential" gas network upgrades were to ensure properties in the town continued to receive a safe and reliable gas supply, SGN explained.
The company said drivers and bus services would be impacted due to the road closures, which would move as it progressed along the road.
Signed diversions will be in place and vehicle access for residents will be maintained.
Bin collection days are also not expected to be changed, SGN said.
The company is expecting to return in 2026 to complete the second phase of its work.
