Coastguards were tasked when an abandoned car was spotted car stuck on the beach in a small Cornish cove at the southernmost tip of the UK.

The black BMW was discovered at the bottom of a slipway and steps, stuck in the sand of Polpeor Cove on the Lizard on Tuesday afternoon, the coastguard said.

After initial concerns about the whereabouts of the owner, coastguards from the Porthoustock and Mullion teams said they found them "safe and well".

The vehicle was recovered later in the day, they added.

Ian Deady saw the car as he was walking the South West Coast Path.

He said: "There was seaweed inside, it had obviously already been through one high tide."
