Almost 600 more roads in Wirral are expected to see new 20mph speed limits by 2025.

The scheme, which was started in 2023 by Wirral Council, has already seen limits changed on more than 2,500 roads.

The decision to move ahead with the final phases of the road safety scheme was approved unanimously as part of a wider programme in March, following feedback.

According to a council report, it plans to finish the roll-out in 2025 with the help of £300,000 in funds from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority.

The local authority is considering rolling out the limits on a further 579 roads across the borough in 22 areas.

It is also proposing extending 20mph limits on some main roads near 11 schools.

Some of those areas are already out for public feedback through the council’s Have Your Say website, external but the consultation will close entirely on 18 September.

The scheme has faced significant opposition with a petition signed by thousands, overwhelmingly negative responses in public feedback surveys, and anger leading to some vandalism.

However, the council has so far continued with the rollout pointing to the potential to save lives.

Five people were killed on the borough's roads in 2022 and over the previous six years 27 were killed and 590 seriously injured.

Since the rollout began, police have begun enforcing the limits and providing warnings for drivers.

Merseyside Police in May said it had issued 170 fines for speeding above 20mph in Wirral, with 50 warning letters issued.
