The demolition of former healthcare buildings at the Overdale site has been completed, officials have said.

The Government of Jersey said Jersey Demolition Contractors (JDC), which started carrying out the demolition work in December 2023, removed more than 20 buildings and structures.

It comes as work progresses towards the construction of a new £710m acute hospital, a first major new building in the new healthcare facilities programme, officials said.

The government said construction of the new hospital was expected to start in 2025.

'Long overdue'

It said completion of the new acute facility was expected by the end of 2028.

The government said the new hospital would include an emergency department, critical care, women and children’s services, elective and emergency operating theatres, and all inpatient wards where an overnight stay was required.

Deputy Tom Binet, Minister for Health and Social Services, said he was "very pleased" with the completion of the demolition.

He said: "Islanders have been long overdue modern healthcare facilities, and while the road to get to this stage has been long, we are now witnessing real, tangible progress."

Binet said he was confident States members would approve the budget for phase one of the programme in a budget debate that is due to begin on 26 November.

He also said he was confident the planning committee would grant the project the necessary approvals.

"With their support, we can finally look forward to a ‘spade in the ground’ on this long-awaited project next year," Binet said.

Constable Andy Jehan, Minister for Infrastructure, said the removal of the former buildings has "cleared the way for a new chapter of healthcare facilities to be built at Overdale".

He said: "I look forward to construction commencing next year."
