Woman repeatedly hit on the head with a hammer

A woman has been struck on the head multiple times with a hammer during an attack in west Belfast.

It happened at a property in the Springfield Avenue area at about 05:30 GMT on Sunday.

It was reported that a man and woman entered the house armed with a knife and hammer. The man then struck the female occupant a number of times.

Her injuries are not believed to be serious.

A man, aged in his 40s, and a woman, in her 30s, were subsequently arrested on suspicion of a number of offences, including aggravated burglary and inflicting grievous bodily harm.

They have since been released on bail.

Police said inquiries are ongoing and appealed for anyone with information to contact them.
