Struggling car maker Saab files for bankruptcy protection

The owner of cash strapped car maker Saab has filed for bankruptcy protection.

Depending on how this is perceived it can be seen as either an effort to buy some breathing room or the last gasp of a failed takeover.

Swedish Automobile has said the move will allow it to restart production while it waits for a promised Chinese investment to be delivered.

But it is not even clear the courts will accept its request.
