Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny freed on bail

Alexei Navalny has been freed from jail pending an appeal, a day after being sentenced to five years for embezzlement.

Thousands of Russians had protested against his conviction, saying it was politically motivated.

Navalny is a vocal critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Daniel Sandford in Moscow said that Navalny may still be in prison before he can run in the Moscow mayoral elections.
