Russian protest leader Alexei Navalny jailed for five years

Russian protest leader Alexei Navalny has been sentenced to five years in jail for theft and embezzlement.

A Russian court has convicted him of defrauding a timber company out of half a million dollars, Navalny and his supporters say the trial was politically motivated.

It is unclear if the verdict means he will be able to run for Moscow mayor in September.
