Japan raises tax on tobacco

Japan has raised tax on cigarettes by 40% in an attempt to curb smoking. The move will raise the price of Japan's most popular brand by a third, bringing it closer to prices in the US.

Higher tax may cut demand which means less tax revenues for the government, but smoking kills about 100,000 people a year in Japan.
