Barroso defends financial tax plans for EU members

Jose Manuel Barroso has called for further EU integration to avoid future eurozone crises.

In a speech to the European Parliament Mr Barroso warned that the EU was facing its "greatest challenge".

The president of the EU Commission has also adopted a proposal for a financial transaction tax on EU members.

The tax would raise about 57bn euros ($78bn; £50bn) a year and would come into effect at the start of 2014.

The UK has said it will resist the move.

The BBC's Shirin Wheeler talked to Mr Barroso about the proposals.
