Key to the success of Syria's political survival is the economy - the new constitution refers to plans to raise living standards and create jobs by increasing economic growth.

But at a time when political pressure is building on the Assad regime to stop the violence, economic reform seems less important - so could the country's economic disintegration influence the outcome of Assad's rule?
