Rail fares: Passengers are benefitting, say operators

Some rail fares in England will rise by 6.2% in January - about double the rate of inflation - although other price rises may be higher.

Michael Roberts, chief executive of the Association of Train Operating Companies, has insisted passengers are benefitting from rising prices, through investment in increased services and more seats, as well as "fantastic improvements" at some stations.

However, he said there was room for reform.
