Why did Lonmin issue an ultimatum to its workers?

The company which owns the South African mine where 34 striking workers were shot by police last week, says operations have now resumed.

Lonmin had threatened to sack anyone who failed to turn up to work on Monday, but the firm now says it is putting the deadline back a day in light of last Thursday's tragic events.
