Virgin Group boss Sir Richard Branson says he is grateful that the decision to award the UK's multi-billion-pound West Coast Main Line rail franchise to FirstGroup has been scrapped by the government.

Sir Richard told BBC News that Virgin Trains were happy to run the franchise while a new bidding process took place, and were hopeful of retaining the franchise for the long term.
