John Lewis managing director Andy Street on festive profits
The department store chain John Lewis said its sales in the five weeks to the end of December rose by 13%, with both stores and online sales doing well.
Overall sales for the five week period were £645m and internet sales growth were especially strong, rising by 44% on last year. Its website now accounts for a quarter of total business.
John Lewis has also said its electrical goods had sold well, with sales up almost 31%.
The company, which is the UK's biggest department store chain, said its clearance sales had had a record-breaking first day with sales of £31.7m.
