Surviving their ordeal is just the first step on a long road to recovery for those caught up in terrorist attacks.
For those left with permanent physical or mental injuries it may be impossible to ever return to their jobs.
Dan Biddle lost both of his legs in the 7 July terror attacks on London's transport network and is now a director at My UK Access, a firm that advises business on how they can employ more disabled people.
He spoke to the BBC's Ben Thompson about the challenges faced by disabled people in the workplace.
