Darling: 'H2S money should be spent elsewhere'

Former Chancellor Alistair Darling has voiced concerns about the maintenance and upgrading of England's existing railways if the HS2 line is built.

He was in the cabinet when the high-speed rail scheme was approved in principle but has now changed his mind.

The estimated cost of the project has risen from £32bn to £42.6bn.

Mr Darling told the BBC that the rise in projected costs would drain cash from other lines.
