YouTube co-founder: Silicon Valley a 'state of mind'

Silicon Valley, California, is home to the headquarters of Facebook, YouTube and Apple, and is renowned for its development of innovative technology and start-up companies.

YouTube founding team member Brent Hurley told the Today programme's Simon Jack that the region is so popular with businesses as it has such a large amount of technical talent.

"For start-ups, the constrained resource is just technical talent. Silicon Valley in California has the highest concentration of that and so if you're looking to build your team of smart folks you're going to do that in California.

"There's always new up and coming [tech companies]", he added, especially given how the younger generation are "digital natives" that have been inspired by films such as 'The Social Network', which told the story of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

He noted, however, that "Silicon Valley is more of a state of mind, it's a mentality among entrepreneurs," and so could be replicated elsewhere.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Tuesday 26 November 2013.
