Fracking: Councils to gain £1.75m per site, says Fallon

English local authorities are to receive all the business rates collected from shale gas schemes in their area, rather than the usual 50%, the government has announced.

Energy minister Michael Fallon told BBC Radio 4's Today programme that he expects local councils to gain up to "£1.75 million" for each exploratory well introduced for fracking.

Mr Fallon also said he believed "20 to 40" new wells will be created over the next couple of years in the UK, and that local people will gain from the jobs that follow.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Monday 13 January 2014.
