Mortgage applicants are to face tougher questions about their lifestyle, under new rules that take effect on Saturday.

Homebuyer Claire Bhandhukravi said after applying for a loan for a car, the amount she was allowed to borrow for her mortgage was reduced.

She described the process of applying as a rigorous and "daunting procedure".
