Government 'capable' of paying living wage to employees

The Archbishop of York, John Sentamu, says the government should make it a goal to cut the number of low paid workers by one million by 2020.

Mr Sentamu, chair of the Living Wage Commission, also says the government should pay its employees the living wage.

He told the Today programme that there is moral justification for paying employees the salary, which stands at £8.80 per hour in London and £7.65 an hour elsewhere in the UK.

It cannot be right, he said, for people to work "all hours that God gives them" and remain in poverty.
