Sex and drugs and GDP

New EU rules will see prostitution and drugs add billions to the UK's GDP.

The Office for National Statistics will give near final data on UK GDP to 2012, based on their own revisions and the new accounting rules for measuring GDP.

The BBC's economics correspondent Simon Jack told the Today programme that spending on prostitution and illegal drugs added about £10bn to GDP in 2009 and other spending, including spending by charities and investment in research and development, contributes to a total increase of £50bn in the figure.
