Osborne: Major tax rises not needed to fund public services

Chancellor George Osborne has rejected claims that "major tax rises" are needed to fund the UK's public services.

He told BBC Newsnight's Evan Davis that those attending the World Economic Forum "can see Britain is pulling ahead from our European neighbours" and believe it should continue to keep to his economic plan.

He added that those who claimed public services could not be supported while undergoing spending cuts had been proved wrong.

Newsnight broadcasts on BBC Two, Monday to Friday from 22:30 GMT.
