The dangers of sapphire-mining in Madagascar

The discovery of sapphires more than a decade ago in southern Madagascar has caused a huge rush. Over the years, tens of thousands of miners have descended on the area to seek their fortunes, turning sleepy villages into boom towns.

But the mining was, and remains, basic and dangerous.
