Athleisure: Stretching the definition of fashion

Workout wear is no longer relegated to the gym.

In New York, "athleisure" has taken hold of the retail sector and new brands selling leggings and athletic apparel as mainstream everyday wear are popping up all over the city.

One such brand is Bandier, an upscale boutique that sells athleisure offerings in a variety of prints and styles, including a stretchy, form-fitting black jumpsuit that costs around £255.

"The shift is really about the lifestyle," says Jayne Harkness, chief merchant at Bandier. "You can wear clothes to the gym and these clothes will see you through the rest of your day - if you're picking up kids, running around, going to the supermarket... whatever you're doing these clothes will take you there."
