Volkswagen boss Martin Winterkorn resigns over 'damage to trust'

Volkswagen chief executive Martin Winterkorn has resigned following the revelation that the firm manipulated US diesel car emissions tests.

In his resignation statement Mr Winterkorn said Volkswagen needed a fresh start.

Berthold Huber, the Deputy Chairman of Volkswagen's supervisory board, made the formal announcement at a news conference at the company's headquarters.
