It used to be a staple of a certain type of journalism: Do the hemlines of womens' skirts and the gyrations of the stock market have anything in common?

Yes we know it sounds daft - or worse - but questions along this line used to be asked on a semi-regular basis. Let's face it, though, it always revealed more about those asking the question than anything else.
