Teachers claim academy 'failure'

The first new academies to be created under the coalition government open on Wednesday.

Thirty-two schools in England have been given academy status in time for the start of the new school year, with around 100 expected to follow over the coming months.

Teachers' unions are branding the government's plan for an expansion of academies in England as a "failure".

But Education Secretary Michael Gove said he was "quite encouraged".
