GCSEs: NAHT welcomes decision not to switch exams

The leader of a teaching union says the government's decision not to scrap GSCEs is comparable to "slamming on the brakes just in front of the cliff face".

Education Secretary Michael Gove has dropped plans to replace the exams in maths, English and science with a baccalaureate.

It follows criticism from MPs and teaching unions.

General Secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers Russell Hobby told BBC Breakfast: "It was hard to find anyone who thought it was a good idea".

"It's going to offer a lot of reassurance to those teaching and sitting GCSEs at the moment."
