Record university places as A-level grades edge down

Record numbers of university places are on offer as pupils in England, Wales and Northern Ireland find out their A-level and AS-level results.

Initial figures show a slight rise in the numbers getting the top A* grade - although the overall pass rate fell for the first time in 32 years.

An extra 30,000 university places are available this year and it is expected that over 500,000 places will be allocated for courses starting in the autumn.
