'University fees need to come down,' says Lord Adonis

Lord Adonis has branded the row over university tuition fees "a mess" on the Today programme.

The Labour peer, who helped to design the tuition fee system, said the government had passed the cost of teaching onto students and that needed to stop.

He is calling for a reduction "across the board" on fees from the current levels of more than £9,000 a year for many courses.
