Election 2015: Tax in spotlight on campaign trail

The official start of the new tax year has sparked a fresh battle between the two main parties over their respective economic plans.

The Conservatives say new tax measures mean millions of people are better off, but shadow chancellor Ed Balls insists Britain can not afford five more years of Tory policies.

Both parties say their rivals have secret plans to raise taxes if they win the general election, meanwhile Nick Clegg has been defending the Liberal Democrats' role in the coalition.
