Classical guitarist David Russell polishes old musical gems

The widely-acclaimed classical guitarist David Russell says centuries-old solo pieces still appeal to young audiences today, despite a very crowded music market.

The audience is drawn in by a good musician's interpretation and personality, he told the BBC. But the performer's style of playing should also correspond to current tastes, he said.

He is currently working on a new CD of Baroque music, from the period 1600-1750, featuring works by the German composer and lute-player Silvius Leopold Weiss, a contemporary of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Here he plays an excerpt from Bach's Choral from Cantata 147.
