Actor Sir Patrick Stewart's memories of domestic abuse

Actor Sir Patrick Stewart has spoken about why his childhood memories are scarred by recollections of domestic abuse.

Although he initially enjoyed a happy upbringing with his mother, Gladys Stewart, life changed dramatically when he was five years old and his father returned to the family home, after serving in World War II.

He says his father would get very angry after he had been drinking at the weekends and was often violent towards his mother.

The actor has been investigating his late father, Alfred Stewart's war career and the impact this had on his character and actions.
