BBC abandons £100m digital project

The BBC has apologised after spending nearly £100m on a project which has been abandoned.

The Digital Media Initiative was set up in 2008 but was halted last autumn having never become fully operational.

Rob Wilson, MP, who is private secretary to the culture secretary, said it was "disastrous" for the BBC and licence fee payers.

"It really is now a worry whether BBC management is capable of handling these huge sums of money," he said.
