Francis Bacon 'liked to paint with a hangover'

We often think of artists as free spirits, but Mason Currey, the author of Daily Rituals, has found that some of the world's most creative individuals "stick to pretty methodical work habits."

He told the Today programme "a lot of great artists started their day pretty early".

"[Francis Bacon] liked to paint with a hangover because he felt his mind was crackling with energy," he explained.

Mr Currey also added that as "Mozart was living the life of a busy freelancer...he had his hair done very early and then he did a lot of his composing very late at night."

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Thursday 12 December 2013.
